Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
