Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Soldiers Party

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing divine entities, fiends, and dark forces expanding in power within the urban setting.

Warning: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The latest chapter ended with a huge suspense moment and revealed the premier party of characters who will split off from the main group to undertake their own adventure, separate from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team features Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Considering an extensive roster, it was evident from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Introduction, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Strategists, and Explorers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

According to the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a traditionally charged battle-oriented story mode where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, figures such as the reluctant priest the cleric might seem mismatched, but the developments of the third episode show why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the group knows exactly where to go next after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise started the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, invading Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the rogue, and taking all the magical artifacts to sell off.

Casimir then cleared his debts and ran away to a fortified location in the northern region, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each member has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the companion and best friend, wants revenge.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the region and cautions that it is a hostile location.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • But, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could help the team reach places they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, Teor vowed a life debt to The savior for his deliverance and will now follow him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are hunted by the powers that rule the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to head to the remote area in pursuit of the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the warrior group will be absent next week, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Questers and Strategists tables.

Fans can expect finding out which players will be assigned to which table in the story’s last Overture episode, streaming live on October 24.
